Single malt phare de la gamme des « Six Classic Malts » inauguré à la fin des années 80, Talisker bénéficiait déjà auparavant d'une réelle reconnaissance auprès des amateurs de whiskies tourbés. Dans les années 70, ce malt se déclinait en versions de 8 ans (45.8%) et 12 ans (43%). Le passage des années 80 vit apparaitre sur l'étiquette le célèbre dandy « Johnnie Walker », qui remplaçait le blason de la distillerie, jusqu'alors utilisé (années 50, 60 et 70). Gros pourvoyeur en malt pour les blends Johnnie Walker, Te Beag, White Horse et Isle of Skye, Talisker fut plusieurs années durant réduit aux deux seules expressions Classic Malts et Distillers Edition. Pourtant, à partir de 2001, les mises en bouteilles s'accélèrent, laissant sortir des chais des versions d'âge vénérable, 20, 25, 30 et 35 ans, pour finalement aboutir en 2016 à l'apparition d'une édition limitée à 5 exemplaires pour le monde d'un Talisker 40 ans The Rare Malts Selection (45.7%). Une première et certainement une dernière, puisqu'à l'instar de Lagavulin, cette édition de Talisker est unique dans l'histoire de la gamme Rare Malts.
