Fondée en 1934 par Masataka Taketsuru au sud-ouest de l'île d'Hokkaido dans le village marin dont elle porte le nom, Yoichi suscita la stupeur et provoqua quelques tremblements lorsqu'en 2001, sa version de 10 ans à 62.2% remporta le titre de « Meilleur Single Malt » du monde, délivré par un panel de journalistes et de professionnels de l'industrie du whisky écossais pour la plupart. Depuis, la déferlante des whiskies japonais n'a eu de cesse de venir éroder plus encore la suprématie des whiskies écossais, irlandais et américains sur la scène internationale. Yoichi fut un acteur particulièrement actif de ce phénomène en multipliant les versions exclusives de son malt : Yoichi 20 ans 1987, 55%, Yoichi 25 ans 1988, 62% ou encore Yoichi 35 ans.
