Cuvée presentation
A blend of two Laphroaig bourbon casks (#6985-86) distilled in 1991 and bottled in 2007 by Signatory Vintage for the Cask Strength Collection. Signatory Vintage’’s founder Andrew Symington first started out in the whisky industry selecting casks for the Prestonfield House hotel in Edinburgh. In 1988, he set up his own company, investing in a small bottling chain, which he installed in his warehouses in Edinburgh. His first bottlings were released at cask strength and without chillfiltration or colouring, all of which was still fairly rare in the late 1980s. The legendary “Dumpy bottle” series also provided information not generally shared by bottlers, including the cask number, cask type and the number of bottles produced. Bottles were numbered by hand. Signatory Vintage developed a solid reputation not only for its legendary whiskies from iconic distilleries (Springbank, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Bowmore) but also for its bottlings from very rare distilleries such as Ben Wyvis, Glen Flagler and Killyloch, and, of course, the many expressions distilled in a Lomond still from Miltonduff (Mosstowie), Glen Keith (Craigduff, Glenisla) and Glenburgie (Glencraig). In 2002, Andrew Symington bought the Edradour distillery in Pitlochry in the Highlands of Scotland. He relocated Signatory Vintage to the distillery’’s location, including its warehouses, which are opposite the distillery. A limited edition of 291 bottles.

Few distilleries have inspired as much excitement among collectors as Laphroaig, and this with just a single expression of its single malt, the Laphroaig 10 Year Old. Nonetheless, since the end of WWII, it has released a large number of bottlings, each varying from one market to the next. Its heavily peated style has developed according to the barrels used for maturation (sherry/bourbon). Its ABV, varying from 40% to 60% for its cask strength bottlings, favours one characteristic of its profile over another. And yet, it is still the Laphroaig 10 Year Old and has been for 70 years and counting. This expression forms a collection of its own thanks to its numerous importers and labels, including Filippi Fausto to Bonfanti, Cinzano, R.H.Elsbach & Co and Carlton Import. Laphroaig is, however, also renowned for its outstanding vintages 1960, 1974, 1976, 1977, 1980 and 1981 and versions aged 15 - 40 years. All in own, a world of its own.
