Cuvée presentation

A single cask (#50270) from Imperial that was distilled in 1995, aged in a hogshead and bottled in 2020. Closed more often than it is open, Imperial was founded in 1897 by Thomas MacKenzie, the owner of Dailuaine and Talisker. The distillery was demolished between 2013 and 2015 and it was during this period that a new distillery was inaugurated on the same site, called Dalmunach. To taste a single malt produced by a distillery that has since closed down is always a special moment, allowing you to taste its history and the pure emotion embodied by it. Absolutely remarkable, this version is no exception to the rule. Very pure, its aromatic and flavour palate is impressively accurate. With its crazy charm, and a natural grace befitting the greatest, it strides imperiously along all the paths of the region that saw its creation: Speyside. A limited edition of 197 bottles.

The distillery Imperial

Scotland, Speyside. Distillery closed. Owner: Pernod Ricard.

Founded in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie (owner of Dailuaine-Talisker Distilleries Ltd) to provide relief to its close neighbour Dailuaine, Imperial was in production for only a few months from the summer of 1898, before closing in 1899. In the space of just one century, the distillery was closed more often than it was in production. Its malt would be used in leading blends such as Teachers, Long John, Old Smuggler and Ballantine's, leaving little room to develop a range of single malts. Only Allied Distillers, which became the owner in 1989, would offer a 15 year old version in its Special Distillery Bottling range. For the rest, one would need to dig through the stocks of independent bottlers, and yet here also they are generally rare. Imperial is definitively an endangered malt.
