Cuvée presentation
Small batch de Strathisla distillé en 1970, vieilli en fûts de sherry et embouteillé en 1999 par la maison de négoce Gordon & MacPhail. Cette dernière est fondée à Elgin en 1895 par James Gordon et John Alexander Macphail. Comme souvent à l'époque, c'est une épicerie et un marchand de vin. En 1915, John Alexander MacPhail se retire et un nouveau partenaire rejoint l'entreprise, John Urquhart. Il est rejoint par son fils George en 1933, quelques années après le décès de James Gordon dans un accident de voiture. Le négociant travaille avec plusieurs distilleries majeures du Speyside dont il se constitue des stocks considérables. Gordon & MacPhail embouteille aussi sous licence les whiskies de nombre de ces distilleries comme Glen Grant, Linkwood, Mortlach, Macallan ou Glenlivet. Les affaires deviennent florissantes dans les années 1970 avec des distributeurs dans plusieurs pays et la vente de fûts à plusieurs embouteilleurs italiens ; des sélections souvent devenues mythiques. Aujourd'hui, Gordon & MacPhail, toujours dirigé par la famille Urquhart dans le bâtiment d'origine, est un des négociants les plus emblématiques de la profession avec des stocks pléthoriques de whiskies parfois très anciens dont on peine à trouver l'équivalent ailleurs. L'élevage est pris en charge du début à la fin par Gordon & MacPhail. Gordon & MacPhail est aussi propriétaire de la distillerie Benromach depuis 1993.

Like Longmorn and Glen Grant, Strathisla was for a long time associated with the renowned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, whose bottlings released with the owners' consent were often confused with the distillery's own. It was also within their vaults that the character and aromatic profile of this first-class malt was forged. A generous and complex style characterized by first and second-fill sherry cask ageing which would become extremely popular among whisky enthusiasts. This identity was abundantly explored through the vintages offered by Gordon & MacPhail, the oldest of which dates back to 1937 (the “Licensed Bottling” white label and “Connoisseurs Choice” black label). In 2004, things changed. The distillery owner, the Chivas Brothers group (Pernod Ricard), took back control and began releasing small batch official bottlings of Strathisla in the ranges Cask Strength Edition and Distillery Reserve Collection.
