Saint James

Dans la deuxième moitié du XVIIIe siècle, la Martinique devient un important producteur de sucre. L'habitation du Trou Vaillant, gérée par les Frères de la Charité, possède des alambics qui sont utilisés pour distiller les résidus de mélasse dans le but soutenir financièrement l'hôpital militaire de Saint-Pierre, au pied de la Montagne Pelée, dont ils ont la charge. Le Père Edmond Lefébure, à la tête de la congrégation, se prend au jeu et organise l'exportation des excédants de rhum aux colonies anglaises d'Amérique de Nord, l'exportation de ce produit étant interdite en France pour ne pas faire concurrence aux eaux-de-vie de vin. Il est commercialisé sous le nom de Saint James, plus facile à prononcer pour les Anglais que Trou-Vaillant, d'après une habitation du domaine, Saint Jacques. Au cours du XIXe siècle, la Martinique devient un producteur de rhum de premier plan. La marque est déposée en 1882, suite à son rachat par Paulin Lambert, un entrepreneur marseillais qui rachète plusieurs habitations et supervise la production de rhum et son exportation en métropole, profitant de l'opportunité offerte par la Restauration de racheter les biens des religieux devenus bien nationaux pendant la Révolution française. C'est aussi à Lambert que nous devons la bouteille carrée que nous connaissons et l'apparition du premier rhum millésimé de la maison : un 1885. Le succès est au rendez-vous malgré les dégâts causés par l'éruption de la Montagne Pelée en 1902. La société est rachetée en 1973 par Cointreau qui regroupe toutes les installations à Sainte-Marie.
