The renowned Caroni distillery needs no introduction, it was the former property of the Trinidadian state and eventually liquidated on 31 July 2003. In October 2004, Luca Gargano, CEO of the Italian spirit distribution company Velier, and passionate fan of both rum and photography, was travelling to Trinidad to scout locations for a future report. There, he found an abandoned site and within the cellars, a library of casks, some of which were distilled as far back as 1974. Thus, the myth of the Caroni bottlings by Velier was born, and the distillery immediately became legendary.
Distilled in 2000, this version was initially aged for nine years in the tropical climate of Trinidad and Tobago, before continuing its maturation in Guayana until 2019, it was then transferred into demijohns in the Cognac region. Elegantly recreating the hydrocarbon notes that have forged the reputation of this now legendary rum, its aromatic and flavour palate also brims with fruity, floral, oily and infused scents and flavours, with remarkable purity and freshness of expression.
This lot includes a 5-litre demijohn of Caroni 2000, a unique format that is not available on the market, aged successively in wood barrels in Trinidad then in Guyana, before continuing its ageing in the bottle in Cognac until 2019.
The distillery Caroni
The Caribbean, Trinidad. Distillery closed, site dismantled.
In 1975, under pressure from across the country, the government of Trinidad nationalized a number of companies, including Tate & Lyle, the English giant of sugar production and owner of Caroni Ltd since 1937. The very competitive economic context, however, led to the closure of the island's sugar refineries and the collapse of the molasses production required for the production of rum. In 2001, the government sold its shares in Rum Distillers Ltd (Caroni) to Angostura and closed the distillery in 2002. Caroni Ltd would be definitively liquidated on 31 July 2003. In October 2004, Luca Gargano, the CEO of the Italian spirit distributor Velier and a passionate rum enthusiast and photographer, visited Trinidad to carry out research for a future report. There he found the site abandoned and, within its cellars, a huge stock of barrels, some distilled in 1974. The story of Caroni began in 2005 and the distillery immediately became the subject of lore.
