Donated by Gordon & MacPhail
This Glen Grant 1954 marks the final chapter of the Mr George Legacy Series–a tribute to George Urquhart, a true pioneer of the single malt and master craftsman of the balance between spirit, cask and time. Donated by emblematic independent bottler Gordon & Macphail, this lot is signed by the fourth generation of the family.
Distilled on 24 April 1954 and aged for around 70 years in a first-fill Xérès sherry puncheon, only 130 bottles of this exceptional single malt were produced, in celebration of the 130th anniversary of Gordon & MacPhail.
Bottled at 50.5% ABV, this amber-coloured Speyside bottling unveils a complex nose that blends notes of leather, plum, clove, blueberry compote, vanilla fudge and roasted coffee. On the palate we can find notes of red apple, nuts, dried orange, tobacco and caramelised banana, evolving towards dark chocolate, spices and a hint of toasted oak. The finish is delicately marked by smoky notes and a fruity persistence.

The distillery Glen Grant

Scotland, Speyside. Distillery operational. Owners: Chivas Brothers Ltd, Pernod Ricard

Glen Grant is a textbook case in the history of the Scotch whisky industry. For decades (and still to this day), the distillery's official label was found on both independent bottlings and the distillery's own bottlings. Some of the most active independent bottlers in the 50s and 60s included Gordon & MacPhail, Campbell, Hope & King (which also worked with Macallan for the bottling and distribution of its malt), Cadenhead, Robert Watson and R Moray Bonding. The result is a multitude of available versions, making it an enthralling dram to collect. As Glen Grant was a blender's malt (Chivas Regal, 100 Pipers, etc.), its owners concentrated on a more classic maturation method characterized by bourbon. Gordon & MacPhail for their part decided to specialize in versions aged exclusively in ex-sherry casks. It was a smart move and their vintages casks became highly prized by whisky enthusiasts and collectors across the world.
