Kavalan Mizunara Oak x Takahide Komatsu case
Kavalan unveils a creation of rare elegance: the Kavalan Mizunara Oak Cask, presented in an exceptional box designed in collaboration with Japanese painter Takahide Komatsu. Centered around the poetic theme ‘Nara Elegance · Butterfly Dance’, this limited edition pairs the tropical vigor of Taiwanese malt with precious, high-altitude Japanese Mizunara oak.
Takahide Komatsu : The Painter of Biodiversity and Movement
Takahide Komatsu, an iconic contemporary artist from Miyazaki Prefecture, is internationally renowned for his delicate compositions rooted in the classical Rinpa school, featuring naturalistic details set against opulent backgrounds of gold or silver leaf. Every label in this series is meticulously hand-painted, embellished, and individually signed by Komatsu.
MizunaraOak
This edition features the Great Purple Emperor Butterfly, a subspecies endemic to Taiwan, on its label. The butterfly takes its name from the blue-violet, metallic-sheened spots that adorn the center of the male’s wings.
This single cask reveals a rich blend of vanilla and coconut aromas transitioning into captivating floral notes and ripe tropical fruits, interwoven with honey and spices.
Peated Mizunara Oak
The label features the Great Silk Moth, a migratory species travelling between Taiwan and Japan, known for its black forewings and brown hindwings dotted with delicate sky-blue patterns.
Within the glass, a complex peaty profile meets the restraint of sandalwood, highlighting the vibrant energy of the peated malt and delivering a rich, deep aroma.
Kavalan 16 Ans : A Climatic Tour de Force
It is impossible to discuss the distillery’s expertise without mentioning its extremely rare aged expressions. In Taiwan, producing a whisky of this age is a true technical feat and a climatic tour de force. Matured in a single new oak cask, this Virgin Oak Single Malt represents a wildly daring venture. Its label depicts Yuanshan Castle, the distillery’s original name, where this spirit has withstood 16 years of extreme subtropical climate to become one of the oldest nectars in the distillery’s history.
Adorned with the extremely rare signature of Mr Lee, the visionary pioneer who challenged the monopoly of traditional whisky-producing nations through great tropical single malts, this bottle stands as a priceless piece of heritage for any discerning collector. More than an exceptional whisky, it is a piece of history that embodies Kavalan’s global triumph.

Two extraordinary personalities are responsible for Taiwan's first independent distillery, Tien-Tsai Lee (TT Lee), founder of the King Car group and owner of Kavalan, and Dr Jim Swan, the consultant behind a huge number of the distilleries opened across the world over the last 15 years, including Penderyn (Wales), Cotswolds (England), Victoria Caledonian (Canada) and several other projects in Scotland, such as Clydeside (Glasgow) and Lindores Abbey (Cupar). It was in 2006 that Kavalan distilled its malt for the first time. Since then, the distillery has frequently caused a stir with bottlings that reflect its perfect mastery of ageing in ex-bourbon casks and Oloroso and Fino sherry casks below subtropical latitudes. Like new distilleries, Kavalan has released numerous single cask and cask strength bottlings to respond to massive demand around the world.
