Fondée en 1815 par McDougall & Co. et établie au sud-est de l'île d'Islay à proximité de la croix de Kildalton, Ardbeg distilla longtemps son malt dans l'ombre de ses deux illustres consœurs et concurrentes : Lagavulin et Laphroaig.C'est sous le patronage de la famille McDonald (groupe Glenmorangie Plc), qui devint propriétaire de la distillerie à partir de 1997, qu'elle put développer tout son potentiel et révéler au public les trésors qui sommeillaient alors dans ses chais. Entre septembre et novembre 1997, pas moins de trois embouteillages, dont deux deviendront de grands classiques, font leur apparition sur le marché : Ardbeg 17 ans, Ardbeg 1978 et Ardbeg Provenance 1974. La décennie qui s'en suit est faste en versions single cask, cask strength, élevées en fûts de sherry et de bourbon, toutes plus belles les unes que les autres. Et c'est paré d'un nouveau flacon au verre teinté et à l'esthétisme celte-gothique assumé qu'Ardbeg investit le marché des amateurs de malts aux senteurs de feu, de tourbe et de baume du tigre.
