Ce n'est pas un hasard si parmi les quinze distilleries écossaises les plus recherchées se trouvent quatre distilleries familiales ou indépendantes. Ce statut les pousse tout au long du 20ème siècle à saisir toutes les opportunités commerciales qui se présentent à elles et à faire montre d'ingéniosité marketing, essentielle au développement et à la pérennité de leur activité. La distillerie Springbank représente l'un des plus beaux acteur-témoins des turpitudes de l'industrie du whisky écossais au 20ème siècle.Cela se traduit par deux mises en bouteilles exceptionnelles, dont l'une est distribuée au tout début des années 70, un 50 ans, distillé le 29 décembre 1919 (mentionné sur son certificat), et l'autre, sortie au début des années 90, résultant d'un ré-embouteillage effectué par la distillerie, limitée à 24 exemplaires pour le monde, affichant le millésime 1919. Mais cela se traduit aussi au tout début des années 2000, lorsque sous la pression d'un stock marqué au fer rouge par des années de crise de production (décennie 1980), la famille Mitchell décide d'effectuer un changement drastique du profil de son single malt et en profite pour changer son flacon.
